Press Release: JML 15km Trail & Stair Challenge, March 21st 2015
Staff & clients of local property company JML Property stepped up fundraising efforts on Sat 21st March with a 'Trail & Stair' challenge hiking and running through the Coloane trails to raise money for Macau charities and associations. The route was a grueling 15km route through the Coloane trails including over 1,500 feet of ascent and descent.
Last year JML raised well over MOP100,000 in donations and are still hoping to break through the $100,000 barrier this year. Clients and friends have been the main sponsors, and corporate sponsors include Zung Fu Mercedes Benz, Macau Golf & Country Club, Lou Sio Fong Lawyer & Associates, WH Furniture, Inception and many others.
A spokesperson from JML said "We worked with the local community to identify areas needing support and the generosity of all of the sponsors has enabled sizeable donations to each of the chosen charities. We are very happy to be associated with Caritas School for Handicapped Children (Escola Caritas de Macau) as well as the Cradle of Hope and other worthwhile organizations".
The Caritas School for Handicapped Children school looks after 35 children suffering with varying degrees of mental and physical disability, from age 6 up to age 21. The fund supported the school in various ways in 2014, from educational trips to Hong Kong to wheelchairs and teaching equipment in the school. JML also employs Kuan Ip Sam, a former student at the school who graduated in June 2014. Ip Sam has Down's Syndrome, and thus faces daily challenges.
Another local organization that JML has been helping now for over 12 years is Cradle of Hope Association. COH run two residential homes for children in Macau, and is the only home for abandoned babies.
Funds have also been passed to the Macau Deaf Association, and EF Orphanage, where a donation was made towards the cost of the children visiting Xiamen. Other organizations supported include the Good Shepherd Centre in their awareness campaign around Domestic Violence in Macau.
Many people question why, with the growth and prosperity in Macau, organizations looking after children, the handicapped, elderly and marginalized need to look for charity sponsorship. Whilst the government funding covers basic services there are still plenty of items that are outside the scope of the governments support, including things like day trips for the children.
JML Property Managing Director, Keith Lawson said "It's a great pleasure for us to be able to make a positive contribution. Family, friends and clients are always very generous and we are lucky to receive so much support". He also said "Whilst raising funds is an important goal, its also about raising awareness and coming together as a community to make a difference, to try to help in any way we can".
JML Property Director, Juliet Risdon added "We can't thank enough everyone who supported the event with donations, fundraising efforts and participation. The effort this year was again absolutely fantastic, it's only because of this generosity and support that the event was such a success".
